Boys basketball: Westwood edges West Iron, 45-37

ISHPEMING — Westwood employed its trademark defense especially well in the middle two quarters to take a 45-37 victory over West Iron County in a high school boys basketball game played Thursday night.

After this makeup of a non-conference game postponed from Dec. 4, both teams now stand 3-2.

Tied 10-10 after one quarter, the Patriots held WIC to just five points in the second period before the Wykons’ Caden Pellizzer hit a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer to pull the visitors back within 22-18 at the break.

But Westwood extended its lead in the third quarter, holding WIC to six points then for a 33-24 advantage entering the final eight minutes.

“We’re a defensive team and we played our kind of basketball,” Patriots coach Chad Hewitt said. “It was a back-and-forth game there for awhile, a bucket here and a bucket there, but then we were able to knock down some shots.”

Westwood junior Nathan Beckman led all scorers with 14 points, while junior teammate Blake Hewitt added 13.

“Those two did a real good job,” Coach Hewitt said. “Blake made 5 of 8 shots from the field, while Nathan knocked down 6 of 8 free throws in the fourth quarter.”

Blake Hewitt also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Pellizzer paced the Wykons with 13 points.

Westwood, which won the JV game 38-24, hosts Iron Mountain on Thursday. WIC entertains Escanaba on Tuesday.
