IRON MOUNTAIN — The Kingsford High School boys and girls swim teams split with Ishpeming/Negaunee in the season opener on Tuesday.

The Flivvers girls beat the Hematites 93-61 while the Ishpeming boys won 76-73.

“We only had six boys due to a last minute scratch so we were really shorthanded,” Kingsford coach Jim Lindstrom said. “They all swam impressive races.”

Caleb Plumley (200 IM, 2:12.38; 100 Breaststroke, 1:05.03) and freshman Kolby Raiche (200 free, 2:25.09; 100 back, 1:15.60) led the way with two wins apiece.

The pair also helped Kingsford take the 200 medley and 400 free relays.

Kingsford took 16 first-place finishes among boys and girls.

The girls were led by Emily Bruns’ pair of wins in the 200 freestyle (2:26.56) and 100 backstroke (1:15.47).

Teammate Emily Nelson took second behind Bruns in the 100 backstroke (1:21.31). Hailey Johnson took the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:18.94.

The girls took the 400 freestyle (Kendall Johnson, Tiana Brooks, Bruns, Ailie Schoenborn) with a time of 4:26.72.

The Flivvers also took the 200 freestyle relay (Trinity Kinnunen, Nelson, Hailey Johnson and Kendall Johnson) with a time of 2:09.56.

“Our first year swimmers did a lot better than we thought they would,” Lindstrom said.
