Girls basketball: Niagara beats STAA

MARINETTE, Wis. — St. Thomas Aquinas Academy keeps inching closer and closer to its first M&O Conference victory of the season.

The Cavalettes, who had Coleman on the ropes last week, gave Niagara everything it could handle on Thursday, but the Badgers size proved to be too much as they defeated STAA 46-36.

“We usually play one disappointing game all season and tonight was it,” Niagara coach Karl Lamoreaux said. “With that being said, give credit to STAA. They shot well, played good defense and were a tough opponent all night.”

The Badgers held a 28-18 lead at halftime.

Like she’s done all season, Alexa Pristelski shot the Cavvies back into the game in the second half.

Trailing 30-18, Pristelski buried three triples in four possessions for STAA and trimmed the deficit to 32-27 with just over 13 minutes remaining.

Jessica Oratch paced Niagara (6-2 overall, 4-2 M&O), with 10 points. Racine added nine and West chipped in eight.

“A win is a win and we won’t remember how this one went a month ago,” said Lamoreaux. “We missed too many free throws and easy shots in the lane, but we didn’t quit and found a win to finish on top.”

STAA (1-9 overall, 0-7 in the M&O), was led by Pristelski with 22 points, including five 3-pointers.
