Kingsford checks Westwood
KINGSFORD — Kingsford held Westwood to 14 points in the second half and rallied for a 45-40 victory in non-conference girls basketball Friday.
Brooke Kriegl led the Flivvers with 16 points and Olivia Allen scored 10.
Westwood led by as many as 14 in the first half and carried a 26-18 advantage into the break.
“Westwood is tough and physical,” said Kingsford coach Mike Cross. “I’m very proud of the effort.”
Strong defensive play and key shots by Allen and Renee Roberts sparked the comeback, Cross said. Westwood shot 28 percent from the floor.
Kriegl drained four threes to keep the Flivvers in the game and Jordyn Kriegl, who scored eight points, hit three free throws down the stretch.
“We fouled way too much in the first half,” Cross said of the sluggish start.
Sophomore Madilyn Koski paced the Pats with 13 points.
“Being the first game, we haven’t ironed out all the wrinkles yet,” said Westwood Coach Kurt Corcoran. “It was a tale of two halves. We jumped on them early, our energy and intensity was up.
“At some point in the third quarter, they hit some big shots and our lead was gone and so was the momentum.”
The Flivvers, who also won the jayvee game 47-22, will host Ishpeming tonight.
Christie Glodowski scored 12 points and Liz Penegor had nine as the Kingsford freshman defeated the Florence junior varsity 38-30.
