Tough schedule awaits WIC

Boys Basketball

IRON RIVER — West Iron County’s difficult boys basketball schedule begins tonight at Westwood.

Westwood stunned the Wykons in last year’s district semifinals at Charles Greenlund Gymnasium. They travel to Forest Park on Monday, Dec. 11, for their second non-conference test.

West PAC schedule begins Thursday, Dec. 14, when L’Anse pays a visit.

“As usual, we have a very tough schedule,” said Coach Dan Schive. “Conference-wise, we are looking at facing tough competition against Calumet and Houghton. Hancock is a little young and L’Anse is fighting some football injuries.”

Schive regards Escanaba, Ishpeming, Westwood, Norway, Iron Mountain and Kingsford as “all tough opponents.”

Northland Pines of Eagle River, Wis., is new to the boys schedule.

WIC graduated seven seniors including West PAC Co-Player of the Year in AJ Weisnicht. Returning to the Wykons are 6-foot-8 senior center Steven Nelson and senior guard Neil Tomasoski. Nelson was a West PAC first-teamer in 2017 and Tomasoski was on the second team.

Junior guard-forward Caden Pellizzer is also returning.

“We are going to work to be better in all the little things that it takes to be a competitive team, both offensively and defensively,” Schive said.

Alex Ralston, nicknamed Cream of Wheat during his playing days with Schive, will coach the junior varsity.
