West Iron County’s new girls basketball coach played for one of the area’s all-time coaching greats.

Eric Shamion, who has Wykons girls basketball off to a 4-2 mark, started for Chuck Greenlund’s 1991 Class C state boys basketball finalists.

“His coaching philosophy had a profound effect on me, especially when we slowed the game down and the opposing fans would yell “BORING, BORING,” Shamion said. “He preached patience at every practice and game.”

The late Chuck Greenlund, a UP Hall of Famer, coached WIC boys basketball and football teams to prominence.

“He was so well respected and had such a great reputation that kids at West Iron couldn’t wait to play for him,” Shamion said. “I was proud to play for “Coach Chuck.”

Eric Shamion’s Wykons are playing in Charles Greenlund Gymnasium. Girls, anything less than 100 percent effort would be disrespecting the name …
