With 2 wrestlers, Iron Mountain 18th at Marquette Challenge
MARQUETTE — Iron Mountain sent two wrestlers to the Marquette Challenge on Saturday.
Jon Carrion (1-2 record at 145 pounds) pinned Ben Kepplek of Pulaski, Wis. Caleb Burklund (2-2 at 189) had pins against Allen Said of Sparta and Steven Rich of Gaylord.
“Injuries and illness prevented a few others from going,” said Iron Mountain coach Cory McLaren. “This was a good learning experience for both of these freshman.”
Iron Mountain finished 18 out of 22 teams with nine points.
Gaylord won the team title with 240 points. Gladstone led the UP with a sixth and 128 points. In the 22-team tournament, Escanaba was 10th with 65, Westwood 12th with 39, Marquette 14th with 32,
St. Ignace 16th with 17 and Menominee 19th with 3. Gwinn and Negaunee did not score.
Marquette athletic director Alex Tiseo said the meet is a large athletics event within the community that nobody really pays attention to.
“The Marquette Challenge is a very big event and one that the community doesn’t really see as a big event,” Tiseo told The Mining Journal. “But it’s huge and it’s completely put on by the wrestling program.
Five Iron Mountain wrestlers medaled in the Westwood junior varsity tournament on Friday.
Trevor Malburg (119) and Jacob Carlson (145) each placed first. John Callahan (119), Dominic Rossato (160) and Jordan Tramotine (285) added seconds.
