Boys basketball: Iron Mountain routs Manistique

MANISTIQUE — The second quarter was brutal for the Manistique boys Thursday night as they dropped a 73-29 basketball decision to second-ranked Iron Mountain.

Manistique trailed 18-11 after the first quarter and was outscored 28-7 in the second while dropping to 1-9 overall and 0-6 in the Mid-Peninsula Conference.

“I was happy with the way we played in the first quarter,” said Emerlds coach Ed Marietti. “We were playing under control, then they pressed us a little. We wanted to hang on to the ball toward the end of the second quarter, but we gave up four steals and they scored eight points. That was disappointing to watch. We gave up too many easy baskets.”

Marcus Johnson led the Mountaineers (9-0, 6-0) with 23 points. Foster Wonders added 22 and Charlie Gerhard had 10.

“We had a slow start but picked it up in the second quarter,” said Mountaineers coach Bucky Johnson. “In the second quarter we played well and everybody got to play.

“Manistique is down this season with just six players.”

Brenden Jenerou scored eight for the Emeralds.

Iron Mountain held a 34-21 rebounding advantage, sank 29 of 67 field goals and committed 10 turnovers. The Emeralds were 11 of 35 from the floor and had 27 miscues.

Manistique, which also dropped the jayvee game, visits second-ranked Escanaba tonight. The Mountaineers travel to Negaunee Tuesday.
