Girls basketball: Free throw woes doom Badgers in 42-37 loss

NIAGARA, Wis. — The Niagara Badgers’ dismal free-throw shooting cost them in a 42-37 M&O Conference loss to Oneida Nation on Tuesday.

The Badgers (13-4, 8-4) were 6 of 21 on free throws, including 5 of 16 in the second half.

“We’re not a great free-throw shooting team to begin with but we’re typically not that bad,” Niagara head coach Karl Lamoreaux said. “Some nights we’re fine with it. I think we shot 55 or 60 percent last night. Then we come back tonight at 29 percent from the line. You can’t win a game, especially against the No. 1 team in your region, with that shooting.”

Oneida Nation (14-1, 11-1) had a 17-14 halftime lead and was limited to 42 points for the game, a notable achievement, said Lamoreaux, considering the team averages about 70 points a game.

“I thought we played them real tough tonight. We ended up losing by five but we were in the game the whole way,” Lamoreaux said. “Our free-throw shooting failed us tonight and it cost us the game. Pleased with the effort, the defense, the attitudes of my girls. They were ready to play. They put it all on the line and we just came up short.”

Oneida Nation’s free throw luck wasn’t much better (10 of 22), but Lamoreaux said simply shooting a better percentage could have handed Oneida its second conference loss.

“Only four girls scored for them,” Lamoreaux said. “We did our job on defense.”

Jasmine Racine led Niagara with 13 points. Maddie West chipped in eight points and nine rebounds.

Sadie Schuman’s 18 points paced Oneida Nation.

Niagara JV won, 43-40.
