NIAGARA, Wis. — Wausaukee outlasted Niagara 28-27 in an M&O Conference girls basketball defensive battle Friday.

The visiting Rangers (8-5, 5-4) managed a 19-16 halftime lead. The Badgers (10-3, 6-3) trailed by eight or nine in the second half, according to Niagara head coach Karl Lamoreaux.

“It’s just a grind with Wausaukee,” Lamoreaux said. “We play them all summer long and have these battles. We know each other well.”

Niagara had a shot in the final seconds.

“We had a 10-footer from the base line,” Lamoreaux said. “It was just a little strong.”

Natalie Schroeder scored nine points and Madelyn Schlies had six for the Rangers. Niagara’s Jasmine Racine converted nine of 11 free throws and scored a game-high 11 points. Cassie Gill added 10 points.

“We pressed them, turned the ball over and they missed some free throws,” Lamoreaux said of the second half. “Then we got back into it.”

Wausaukee converted six of 17 free throws including three of 10 in the second half. Niagara made 11 of 17 in the game.

On Thursday, Niagara visits Suring and Wausaukee hosts Coleman.

Wausaukee also won the junior varsity game by the same score as the varsity, 28-27.
