Hockey: Sault Ste. Marie beats Kingsford in Showcase

MARQUETTE — Sault Ste. Marie scored four straight goals and defeated Kingsford 6-4 in the Marquette Showcase high school hockey event Saturday at Lakeview Arena.

The Flivvers (6-3) built a 3-1 lead in the second period but the Blue Devils scored a shorthanded goal to begin a stretch of four consecutive goals.

Kingsford held a 3-2 lead entering the third period. Sault tallied three goals for a 5-3 advantage until a Daunte Fortner goal with 2:52 left ended the streak.

Sault added its sixth goal with 37 seconds remaining.

Sophomore Trey Bociek led the Flivvers with a goal and three assists. Reece Fortner and Sawyer Perpich also had Flivver goals. Daunte Fortner added two assists.

With Tuesday’s game at Jeffers postponed, Kingsford returns to the ice Saturday night, Jan. 6, at Rhinelander.

Marquette rallied from a 3-0 deficit to edge Saline 4-3 in overtime in the other game Saturday. The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for the Redmen (5-6) as the Hornets (8-1) were handed their first loss of the season.

Sault Ste. Marie defeated Marquette 4-2 on Friday.
