Mountaineer boys dominate opponents

ISHPEMING — Iron Mountain High School boys bowling team rolled over the two teams Saturday to break a first-place deadlock in the UP High School Bowling Conference at River Rock Lanes.

In the first match, IM dispatched Ishpeming 2853-2538 on its home lanes, winning 35-5 in a complete sweep of both Baker games and all three match play games.

In the second match of the day, the Mountaineers continued their dominance over Marquette by splitting the two Baker games and then sweeping match play 739-692, 831-731 and 800-718.

“I was a little concerned coming out of a three-week holiday break into our first doubleheader as to how we would perform, but the boys answered any doubts I had,” said Coach Pete Tomassoni. “We worked hard over break and it really paid off. The entire team played and performed well.”

Individually, the Mountaineers were led by Ian Driscoll’s 566 series which included a 204 game and three individual points.

Zach (Spanky) Spera tossed two good sets, the first a 544 series against Ishpeming and a 520 against Marquette. He garnered five out of a possible six points. Noah Jacko followed with 476 (2 points) against Ishpeming and 497 (3 points) against IMarquette.

Against Ishpeming, Zach Hanson threw a 493 series, winning all three of his individual points.

Mountaineer X team, coached by Kevin Hanson, beat Gladstone 2116-1226, taking 38 out of a possible 40 points, and then overcoming Ishpeming 2212-1953, winning 29 out of 40 points.

Topping the X bowlers in each match was Trey Nichols who threw a 425 series against Gladstone and a 463 series against Ishpeming. Brandon Malburg followed closely with a 440 series against Ishpeming, winning all three match points.

Combo X team, made up of members of both Iron Mountain and Menominee bowlers, split their matches. They beat Westwood 2111-2058, winning 26.5 points, before being edged out by Marquette 2162-2110. Nate Henes topped the Iron Mountain bowlers on Combo X with a 393 series.

Lady Mountaineers split

IMHS girls bowling team split its doubleheader at River Rock Lanes.

The Mountaineers first downed Menominee 2173-1814, winning a possible 34.5 out of 40 points.

They started with a strong Baker match, taking both games, and then swept all three match play games 627-498, 310-592 and 647-553.

Freshman Lexi Jacko led the the way with a 402 series (2 points). On her heels were Natalie Dykhuis with 388, Hanna Bastian with 386 and Maddy Doucette with 385 (3 points).

After a break, the girls came back to face undefeated Ishpeming/Negaunee.

“All I asked for was their best, and that is what they put forth,” said Coach Cathy Tomassoni.

The Hematites ended up on top 2984-2517, taking 37 points.

Leading the Mountaineers was Hanna Bastian with a 601 series on games of 175-179-247. Bastian also won three of her match points. Following were Maddy Doucette with 441 and Lexi Jacko with 440.

The girls and boys teams travel to Marinette on Saturday. Competition begins at 10 a.m. at Michel’s Dome Lanes.
