Tech’s Berger eyes retirement from Vikings

Minnesota Vikings’ Joe Berger, in the NFL trenches for 13 years, plans to retire after this season.

That could be after the Super Bowl at US Bank Stadium, home of the Vikings.

“I’m not signing retirement papers as soon as I walk out of here, but that’s kind of the way I see it,” the 35-year-old guard and center told Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. “It’s been fun, but it’s time for the young kids to do it.”

Berger, a mechanical engineering major at Michigan Tech, showed St. Norbert smarts in posting a 36 on the Wonderlic intelligence test.

According to a survey of NFC North scouts by Pro Football Hall of Fame scribe Bob McGinn, Chicago’s Kyle Long is the division’s top right guard with Berger and Detroit’s TJ Lang tied for second …

An area school administrator who caught my error noted that “Don Carlson is the best basketball player I ever played against.”

Carlson, according to numbers compiled by historian Art Viens, is the fifth-leading scorer in KHS history with 766 points. Steve Short, 1036; Chris Moore, 949; Jeff Gregory, 886; and Marc Calcaterra, 856, top the list.
