Boys basketball: Wausaukee takes down Niagara in regional
WAUSAUKEE, Wis. — Matt Delfosse scored 25 points and Wausaukee rallied past Niagara 58-49 in a WIAA Division 5 boys basketball regional opener Tuesday.
The Badgers (6-17) trailed 24-18 at halftime but moved ahead by five points with about six minutes remaining in the game, according to Niagara coach Jim Hoogland.
“We played with a lot of intensity,” Hoogland said. “We missed a lot of shots early but we never gave up.”
Austin Hagerty led the Badgers with 17 points. Alex Hagerty had 14 points and seven rebounds before fouling out with four minutes left in the game.
“I am so proud of how hard we played tonight,” Hoogland said.
Niagara converted 14 of 31 free throws — three of 14 in the first half.
Hayden Renikow chipped in 13 points and Brandon Shigouri had 12 for the Rangers (10-13), coached by Iron River native Dave Lindbeck.
Wausaukee travels to Green Bay NEW Lutheran on Friday in a regional semifinal.
Hoogland expressed appreciation to seniors Alex and Austin Hagerty, Ben Oratch, Casey Antonissen and Zak Prideaux in their final basketball game with the Badgers.
“I want to thank our seniors for their dedication to the program,” Hoogland said. “They will be missed.”
