Norway’s fourth-quarter turns back North Central

POWERS — Mikayla Faull, Karli Stanchina and Jaclyn Bal hit key fourth-quarter field goals as Norway held off North Central 37-31 in non-conference girls basketball Thursday.

A Stanchina triple boosted Norway’s lead to 31-26 in the final minutes.

“This was a good win for us,” said Norway Coach Joe Tinti. “We put together four quarters for one of the few times this season.”

Bal’s 11 points led the Knights (5-10, 3-3), who led 16-8 at halftime after the Jets went scoreless in the second quarter. North Central took a brief 24-22 lead at the end of the third quarter.

“This was a full team effort and we didn’t skip a beat,” Tinti said. “When we subbed different groups we utilized our strengths.”

Tinti’s cited his team’s ability on offense to isolate Faull and have Bal (two treys) shoot from the outside. Haley Clifford and Ada VanHolla created turnovers while Mackenzie Clifford and Teiona Fuson keyed the speed defense.

The Knights had nine turnovers in the game.

The Jets connected on 11 of 54 shots from the field for 20 percent.

Natalie Dombrowski made three 3-pointers en route to a team-high 11 points for the Jets, who had a lot of turnovers in the first half.

The Jets host Carney-Nadeau on Monday and the Knights travel to Mid Peninsula on Thursday.

North Central won the junior varsity game.
