Boys basketball: Beauchamp’s 14 points leads Flivvers over Nordics
FELCH — Tyler Beauchamp scored 14 of his game-high 20 points in the first quarter and Kingsford downed North Dickinson 72-42 in a non-conference game Thursday.
The Flivvers (9-10) jumped out to a 20-2 first-quarter lead in the regular season finale.
“It was a really good last game for our team,” said Kingsford head coach Dan Olkkonen. “Our seniors have done so much they deserved to go out with a win.
“This is a rivalry but not a heated one. We have a good relationship. The kids did a good job and I’m proud of the way they played.”
Luke Terrian chipped in 14 for the Flivvers.
“Everybody played and everybody scored,” Olkkonen said.
Matthew Bruette scored 17 points and grabbed 12 of the Nordics’ 30 rebounds.
“We had a poor first quarter,” said Coach Chris Mattson, noting a one-for-15 shooting mark. “We got off enough shots but we couldn’t hit worth a lick. We had a difficult time finding Beauchamp, one of the their best players.”
ND (2-18) had 16 turnovers and shot 16 of 56 from the floor (29 percent).
“You’re not going to be successful if you make as many turnovers as field goals,” Mattson said. “I liked the way we rebounded especially Matthew. I was happy with his intensity and he gave us a spark inside. Our second team gave us some energy off the bench.
“All in all, Kingsford played harder especially in the first quarter.”
Kingsford viewed this contest as “kind of a play-in game” for next week’s Class B district tournament.
“On Wednesday we’ll be playing one of the toughest teams in the UP,” said Olkkonen, referring to Escanaba or Gladstone in the Kingsford gym. “This was good preparation.”
North Dickinson also begins district tournament play Wednesday, traveling to Carney-Nadeau for a Class D semifinal.
Kingsford defeated North Dickinson 71-45 in the junior varsity game.
