Boys basketball: Phelps eliminates Florence, 61-34

PHELPS, Wis. — Top-seeded Phelps rolled past Florence 61-34 in a WIAA Division 5 regional semifinal Friday.

Carlos Gutierrez, one of four Knights scoring in double figures, led the way with 15 points. Phelps (21-3) held a 35-11 halftime lead.

“Just a rough night,” said Florence coach Bryan Bomberg. “We tried everything. But credit the kids for giving their best effort.”

Kaden Schuls led the Bobcats (8-14) with 18 points and Evan Beaster added nine.

“It was tough to overcome losing one of our leading scorers in Riley Hixon to a broken thumb,” Bomberg said.

Florence had 24 turnovers and shot 26 percent from the floor.

The Bobcats coach expressed appreciation for the fan support.

“As I told the guys in the locker room, ‘We must get better,'” Bomberg said. “We have a young team and we lose no one, so that’s a plus. Kids have some high goals and expectations of themselves. I’m really proud of how far they’ve come from the beginning of the season.”

Phelps will host fifth-seeded Menominee Indian tonight.
