Boys Soccer: U19 Stars split games

NIAGARA, Wis. — Northern Stars U19 boys soccer team built a 3-0 halftime lead and held off Fox Cities United 3-2 in East Central League play Sunday at Riverside Park.

David Brule scored one minute into the game, assisted by Dane Stanchina. The Stars took a two-goal lead seven minutes later when Ben Backlund chased down a long punt from goalkeeper Caleb Bryant and scored past the Fox Cities keeper.

Late in the first half, Eamonn Weed made a crossing pass from the left wing to Owen Caudell who kicked the ball into the upper left corner of the net for a 3-0 halftime lead.

Fox Cities scored two second-half goals.

Howard knocked off the Stars 3-1 on Monday.

Howard opened the scoring when a blocked shot deflected to one of their players 10 yards in front of the goal. The Stars tied the game late in the first half when Dane Stanchina crossed the ball to Ben Backlund, who put a low shot into the right corner of the net.

The game remained tied until the middle of the second half, when Howard scored on an ‘own goal’ when an attempted clearing kick by a Stars defender ended up deflecting into the net.

The Stars had several late scoring opportunities, including a shot that deflected off the left post, but were unable to find the net.

The Stars (5-2) are sitting in third place in the East Central League behind Kimberly and Howard, who play each other Monday.

The Stars will play in the Summer Shootout tournament this weekend in Appleton.
