Wells, Carlson receive Niagara’s Sherman Bratton Scholarships

NIAGARA, Wis. — Allison Wells and Cole Carlson have been awarded the prestigious Sherman Bratton Memorial Scholarships at Niagara High School.

In doing so, the recent class of 2018 graduates became the 24th annual recipients of the scholarships. They were presented with their awards by District Administrator Nathaniel Burklund during the Niagara High School’s commencement ceremony.

The $500 scholarships are provided annually by the family and friends of the late Sherman Bratton. He had been a longtime resident of Niagara where he had compiled an enviable record of service to the community’s youth, school and community as a whole.

An avid sports fan, Bratton was a great supporter of the school’s girls and boys sport teams. He served several years on the Niagara School Board where he had been instrumental in the construction of the football field and the Riverside Park soccer complex.

Candidates for the scholarship must have participated in athletics and compiled a positive record of sportsmanship, said a representative of the Niagara Area Scholarship Foundation (NASF)

The daughter of Lisa and Robert Wells graduated in the upper half of her class.

“Allison is a personable young lady and fine athlete who distinguished herself earning varsity letters in volleyball, basketball, and softball,” said NASF representative.

Wells was a member of the band, participated in forensics, and was the female recipient of the school’s departmental award for physical education.

“She also is a talented artist who was a member of the Association of Student Artists earning an ASA award as well as recognition as a Niagara High School Student of the Week,” NASF representative said.

She articipated in Little League baseball and softball for nine years and was a Girl Scout for seven years.

A member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Wells has volunteered at her church. She also has volunteered working concessions at the Niagara Lions Picnics and helping the Lions with the highway litter cleanups.

During the summer, she works part-time at the Office Planning Group.

In the fall, Wells will attend Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton to begin studies toward earning a degree in masonry with a specialty in terrazzo.

Cole Carlson, grandson of Brian and Sandy Carlson, is an honor roll student who graduated seventh in the class of 2018.

“The popular young man was very active in a variety of extracurricular activities and earned varsity letters in football and track,” said the NASF representative.

Carlson represented his school at Badger Boys State, where he was elected mayor and this spring he was honored by being the recipient of the American Legion Good Citizen Award.

He also earned the Predator Award in football and the Storm Award in track. Carlson enjoys music and plays in the school band as well as with the Norway City Band.

Active in student government serving as class vice president and as a member of the student council, he also been on the prom and homecoming courts and last fall was elected as homecoming king.

Carlson also has been involved in One-Act Play and forensics and has served as a junior camp counselor at the Northern Lakes Impact Center.

A member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, he has been an alter server and has done volunteer community service with Badgers United and the Niagara Service Group helping with food drives and blood drives and he has been a student mentor.

Next fall, Carlson will attend Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton to begin aviation studies. His career goal is to become a pilot and fly globally for an American airline.
