Football: Wykons blank Munising, 14-0
IRON RIVER — West Iron County shut out Munising 14-0 to open the West PAC football season Friday at Nelson Field.
“It was a dogfight,” said WIC head coach Mike Berutti. “Our defense played extremely well. “This time of year defenses are way ahead of the offenses.”
Wykons’ Noah Thomson recovered a fumble at the Mustangs 19 to set up the first score. Quarterback Trey Bociek plunged over from the one for the second-quarter score and Bryant Schram, a standout lineman making his debut at running back, ran for the two-point conversion.
Schram rushed for 70 yards on 15 carries in the West PAC Iron Division game.
“Bryant did OK and had a couple nice runs but it’s not definite,” Berutti said of the 6-foot, 285-pound Schram at running back. “Munising had some big boys and he was smaller.”
In the fourth quarter with fourth down and three from the Mustangs 22, Zach Quintero executed a double hand-off for a 22-yard touchdown run.
West Iron had 151 yards total offense — 141 rushing. Munising tallied 172 yards — 135 rushing.
“We had problems with their option,” Berutti said.
Munising made three turnovers to WIC’s one. Wykons’ Caden Pellizzer had two interceptions.
The Wykons continue Iron Division play Friday at Bark River-Harris.
“We had first-game jitters,” Berutti said. “We’ll be better next Friday. We better be because Bark River is tough on defense.”
