KINGSFORD — Northland Pines turned back Kingsford 3-2 in the Flivvers’ boys soccer home opener Thursday at Commemorative Field.

The Eagles (1-1) held a 1-0 lead in the first half and 3-1 in the second.

Kingsford (0-2), shut out in Tuesday’s season opener at Marinette, evened the score in the first half Thursday with a goal from 25 feet out by junior Ben Backlund. Kobe Gordon had the assist.

After Liam Oas’ second goal of the game put the Eagles up 3-1 in the second half, a Gordon goal from up close with eight minutes remaining closed the gap to 3-2. Backlund had the assist.

“We struggled to control the ball and keep it on our side of the field,” Kingsford coach Jeff Gordon said. “We have a lot of new players that are working hard to gel with our returning players.”

The Flivvers have 10 players back from last year along with seven newcomers.

Freshman Ethan Gribble was in net for the Flivvers.

“Our goalie Ethan Gribble played a great game,” coach Gordon said. “He had many outstanding saves.”
