ScuttleBu(r)t …

There’s another Iron Mountain connection to Portland High School athletics.

Jacob Veale, son of Portland AD and 1989 IMHS grad Kevin Veale, stood out in the Lansing area school’s 33-12 win over Sexton. The senior back wound up with three touchdowns and 79 yards on 12 carries.

“He’s one of those kids who’s elusive and can make a play with something out of nothing,” Portland Coach John Novara, another 1989 IMHS grad, told the Lansing State Journal.

Veale also ran for a touchdown the following week.

“Kevin’s son is a very good player for us,” John said …

Yours truly has been inundated lately with Medicare material. They must have heard that I’ve been identified as “the old guy shooting football pictures at Flivver Field.”

Gladstone’s Adam Bruce, who ran away with the Kingsford Invitational cross country meet at City Park, has four possibilities for college.

Bruce, posting a time of 16 minutes, 38 seconds, finished second in Division 3 and 10th out of 450 runners in the recent Holly Invitational …

From ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel: “Most of the guys I know studied harder for their fantasy-football draft this year than all of high school and college combined.”

We wish much happiness to “The Little Potlicker” and Lauren. Pat and the late Lindy Lobeck, a Daily News staffer for many years, are Matt’s parents …

A local football officiating crew made good time traveling to Calumet. Dean Lefebvre piloted his plane for the Copper Kings’ game with Negaunee.

The other officials/passengers included Dean Nelson, Rich Lundholm, Paul Angeli and Andy Lewis …

Woody Wilson, who brought his Hoosier School of Basketball to Iron River and other area sites, passed away last month after a four-year fight with cancer.

Wilson, 75, had been a St. Norbert College men’s basketball assistant for the past 12 years.

“For 55 years, Woody has been teaching life lessons and the fundamentals of basketball to young people in an effort to ‘just help kids get better,’ read his obituary from Ryan Funeral Home …
