KINGSFORD — Kingsford got a busy week started Monday by beating rival Iron Mountain 6-2 in girls tennis.

“We couldn’t have asked for a nicer day,” said Kingsford head coach Sarah Massie. “It’s often hard to come out on a Monday and put together a good match after having the weekend off. The girls seemed to enjoy themselves today and they played well, which is always good to see.”

Kingsford No. 1 Stephanie List, one of three Flivver singles winners, topped Jorden Stoner 6-4, 7-5.

“Stephanie played a great match today,” Massie said. “Win or lose, she always fights for every point and that paid off today.”

Mountaineers head coach Tony Tatangelo also noted the weather conditions and Stoner’s play.

“Today was a great day for tennis,” Tatangelo said. “Jorden Stoner had a tough match today against List. She had a lot of good shots and ball placement.”

The Flivvers also won in singles with No. 3 Lizzy Cross and No. 4 Jessica Tomasoski. Iron Mountain’s Macy McCormick took No. 2 singles.

“Macy McCormick played very well today,” Tatangelo said. “She came out aggressive with confidence and shot placement. She played today the way she practices.”

In doubles, Mountaineers’ No. 1 Saylor Swartout-Claire Mongrain spilled Grace Lorenzoni-Mackenzie Schwamlien 6-1, 6-1.

“Saylor and Claire followed suit with McCormick,” Tatangelo said. “They had great communication and shot placement.”

Kingsford claimed the other doubles with No. 2. Annie McCole-Teagan Petschar, No. 3 Valerie Richtig-Rylee Papp and No. 4 Bailey Johnson-Anna Murvich.

The Flivvers will host Westwood on Tuesday and Escanaba on Thursday.

“I’m looking forward to enjoying our last few weeks of matches with GNC’s and UP’s on the horizon,” Massie said.

The Mountaineers are also active this week with matches against Gladstone today and Westwood on Thursday.

“We have a lot of tennis to play this week,” Tatangelo said.
