Tennis: Negaunee spills IM, 7-1

NEGAUNEE — Negaunee knocked off Iron Mountain 7-1 in girls tennis Thursday.

Mountaineers’ point came at No. 1 doubles where Saylor Swartout-Claire Mongrain topped Julia Johnson-Mykenna Kontio 7-5, 6-4.

“Saylor and Claire came out a little sluggish but quickly kicked it into high gear and didn’t look back,” said IM Coach Tony Tatangelo. “Those two are a lot of fun to watch this year.

“They were down in the first set and came back to win it in a tiebreaker. They had great communication, court awareness and shot placement.”

At No. 1 singles, Negaunee’s Abby Nelson clipped Jorden Stoner 6-4, 6-1.

“It was a tough match again,” Tatangelo said. “The girls played good points but couldn’t come up with enough for a win.

“Jorden Stoner had a great match. She had great ball placement and court awareness.”

The Mountaineers play three matches next week starting with Kingsford on Monday.

“We have a much-needed practice (Friday),” Tatangelo said.

The Mountaineers will hold a fundraiser from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at Bimbo’s.
