New coach leading Goodman-Pembine boys basketball

PEMBINE, Wis. — There’s a new look and feel to Goodman-Pembine boys basketball.

New coach Jeff Zerbst has completely revamped the offense to match the current skill set of this year’s team. However, the Patriots will have limited practices before Tuesday’s season opener with Wausaukee at Pembine.

“In what will be a trying first week to our season, we are installing much of our offensive concepts and fine-tuning details on the defensive side of the court,” said Zerbst.

Seniors’ Evan Metras, Zander Gilbert, Stanley Masusczak and Caleb Nelson, and juniors’ Logan Maloney, Josh Wallschlager and Micah Heath played last season.

“This team will be led by our seniors but will need contributions from underclassmen as the season unfolds,” Zerbst said. “We have several players that are capable of lighting up the scoreboard.

“However, this team will only go as far as defense takes us.”

The Patriots visit Niagara on Thursday and travel to Elcho on Friday, Nov. 30, for the Northern Lakes Conference opener.

“Playing within ourselves while limiting turnovers will be an emphasis throughout the season and we intend to make opposing teams earn their points on the other end of the court,” Zerbst said.

GP graduated All-NLC second-teamer Hagan Braaten, honorable mention Wyatt Marcy and Elisha Heath from last year’s squad (7-15 overall, 5-9 NLC).

Zerbst, who takes over for John Swick, is assisted by Roger Maloney, Erin Zerbst and Joseph Nutt (junior varsity).
