Wendy’s High School Heisman: No. 1 Flivvers earn honors

KINGSFORD — Wendy’s High School Heisman has recognized Peyton Johnson and Luke Terrian of Kingsford High School as state finalists and school winners.

Wendy’s recognizes high character student-athletes who have displayed excellence and integrity both on and off the field as state finalists and school winners.

For these students, taking the easy way out or cutting corners isn’t an option and Wendy’s is proud to honor their dedication.

“Kingsford High School is proud to recognize Luke Terrian and Peyton Johnson as our 2018-2019 Wendy’s Heisman state finalists,” said Kingsford High School principal Lyle Smithson. “Luke and Peyton are outstanding examples of successful high school student athletes. Both students have excelled in the classroom taking the most challenging academic courses Kingsford High School has to offer, and both have attained a GPA of over 4.0. 

“They have excelled in the athletic arena earning numerous postseason UP, state and national awards for athletic excellence.  Luke and Peyton are highly respected by their fellow students, teachers, and coaches and are outstanding student-athlete representatives of Kingsford High School and the Wendy’s Heisman.”

Peyton Johnson is the daughter of Paul and Marian Johnson of Iron Mountain.

Peyton has received seven varsity letters in swimming, cross county, soccer and track, and has received numerous accolades for her athletic endeavors.

In the two years that Peyton was a member of the cross country team, she received the Most Valuable Player award and was named to the All-UP team each year. She was selected as a member of the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association all-state cross country team in 2016.

Peyton has been a member of the track team all years in high school and is a member of the record breaking 1600 relay team.

In varsity soccer, she has received the KHS team award for most hustle.

While Peyton has excelled in all sports she has been involved in, swimming is most notable. She is a member of the All-UP swimming “Dream Team.”

Peyton holds 10 KHS swimming records, 24 Northern Lights YMCA team records and 11 Green Bay Swim Club records.

She was also named a USA Swimming Scholastic All American for 2017-2018.

Peyton’s involvement in the classroom and community are equally impressive. She has been on the Academic Honor Roll all throughout high school and is ranked No. 1 in her class with over a 4.0 GPA. She is a member of the National Honor Society and elected president this year.

She is also a member of the KHS Student Council and Environmental Club and serves as a tutor at Kingsford High School. She has been named Student of the Month in Advanced Placement Chemistry and Advanced Placement Calculus as well as having received the Advanced Physics Student of the Year award.

She has also received the Society of Women in Engineering Award from Michigan Technological University and the US Air Force Award for Excellence in Math and Science.

Peyton has compiled over 300 hours of community service.

She plans to attend Boston University or the United States Naval Academy where she will pursue a degree in biology.

Luke Terrian is the son of Drs. Steve and Monica Terrian of Kingsford. He has received seven varsity letters in basketball, baseball, and football.

“His athletic achievements are impressive,” Smithson noted.

As a sophomore in football, Luke received GNC and All-UP honorable mention. In his junior year, he was named to the All-GNC and All-UP first team. In his senior year, Luke was team captain and selected as a member of the All-GNC first team and the All-UP Dream Team.

As a sophomore in basketball, Luke received All-GNC second team and All-UP honorable mention honors. He was also voted as the team MVP. In his junior year, Luke received berths on the All-UP Class ABC and All-GNC second team and was again elected as his team’s MVP as well as being the team captain.

In baseball, Luke has received Allp-Skyline Conference first team, all-district, all-regional first team and all-state second team honors as an infielder. He was the recipient of the prestigious Hometowne Lumber Athlete of the Year for 2017-2018.

Luke has also been a standout in the classroom and in the community. He has been on the academic honor roll all throughout high school and is ranked No. 1 in his senior class with over a 4.0 GPA.

He is a member of the KHS National Honor Society and is also a member of the KHS Key Club and the KHS Student Council where he serves as the historian. Luke has been named Student of the Month in Advanced Placement Chemistry and Advanced Placement US History and was a recipient of the US Air Force Math and Science Award for Excellence. Luke has accumulated over 100 hours of community service.

Luke plans to attend college to pursue a degree in pre-med or engineering.
