Boys basketball: Nordics offense surges in 87-61 win over Big Bay

FELCH — A dominant first quarter sprung North Dickinson in an 87-61 rout over Big Bay de Noc on Tuesday.

The Nordics (2-2) outscored Big Bay 27-8 in the first quarter and shook off the shroud that kept North Dickinson in limbo through the start of its previous three games.

“We had slow starts offensively and defensively,” North Dickinson head coach Chris Mattson said. “We’ve been giving up oints in the first quarter and haven’t been scoring many points. We turned that around tonight and that was good.”

Matthew Bruette led the Nordics with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Quenten Ackerman and Cameron Schultz had 17 points apiece.

North Dickinson led 47-24 at halftime.

The strong first quarter was what eased the Nordics into a flow for the rest of the game, averaging nearly 22 points a quarter.

“I was very happy with our first quarter. Not only did we jump out with 27 points, but we gave up only eight. That kind of set the tone early for our team,” Mattson said. “A solid defense kind of led to some quick scores on the other end. Joe Roell had 13 for us tonight, but he sparked us early on with 10 first-quarter points. It was kind of unselfish play. Everybody scored on our team, which was very nice. I was happy to see that. The ball was moving from one side of the court to the next. This was a game the kids had fun playing.”

The Nordics shot 37 of 61 on the night, with most of them coming from outside, Mattson said. North Dickinson was 7 of 10 on free throws.

“We’ve been struggling with free throws in the first part of the season,” he said. “We shot 7 for 10 free throws and that was improvement.”

Mattson said he believes it’s North Dickinson’s first time scoring at least 85 points in a game in six or seven years.

“We played Bark River at home,” Mattson said. “We scored 89 that game.”

North Dickinson JV lost to Kingsford freshmen, 63-31.

The Nordics play at Munising on Monday.
