IMHS excited to start season
Fourteen on MHSAA Division 4 roster
IRON MOUNTAIN — The Mountaineers are excited about this year’s high school wrestling season.
“This will be an exciting year for us,” said Iron Mountain Coach Cory McLaren. “We are back in Division 4 where we belong.
“With 14 on the roster and the possibility of fielding a full lineup for the first time, it’s hard not to be excited.”
Iron Mountain is no longer part of a co-op with Norway, dropping the program from Division 3 to Division 4 in the MHSAA ranks.
“Our three-year co-op with Norway has ended but it was a positive experience,” McLaren said.
The Mountaineers return eight letter-winners in seniors Thomas Armburst (215), Jordan Tramontine (189) and Dow Dawson (135); juniors Jacob Carlson (140) and Jon Callahan (112); and sophomores Caleb Burklund (171), Jon Carrion (152) and Trevor Malburg (125).
Burklund, seeded fifth in the 2018 UP Finals, took the 171-pound title. Carrion was second at 145.
“Last year we had a very successful freshman class,” said McLaren, noting Trevor Malburg, Carrion and Burklund each had over 20 wins. “We have another strong freshman class that had a lot of success in the youth circuit and should be competitive from the start.”
Mountaineers start the season Saturday in the Westwood Super Duals.
“If we can stay healthy we should be a competitive team come team district time,” said McLaren, helped out by longtime assistant Charles (Ugg) Bolo.
