Kingsford High School hockey coach Dennis Murvich resigned last week.

Longtime assistant Greg Wadge will assume head coaching duties for the rest of the season.

“No comment. It’s not even so much about me. Those guys need to get behind Wadge and move forward, and that’s it,” Murvich said in a phone interview. “I want what’s best for the team and dragging this out isn’t what’s best for the team.”

Kingsford athletic director Al Unger confirmed the news Monday afternoon, but did not disclose Murvich’s reason for leaving the program.

“I’d rather not, to be honest with you — personal on his part,” Unger said. “He just resigned on Thursday. I’d like to keep it at that.”

Murvich, who tendered his resignation on Jan. 17, took over the Kingsford program before the 2017-18 season and coached the Flivvers to a state quarterfinals appearance last year.

After a 3-2 win over Lake Orion on Jan. 12, Murvich leaves the program with a 39-29-2 record including a 4-2 playoff record with one district and one regional championship.

Murvich said he plans to remain as director of hockey with the Dickinson Amateur Hockey Association.

“I’m still going to work — just like I was — work with the youth programs from 6-under right up to 14U,” he said.

Wadge was head coach of the Flivvers for eight seasons from 1999 to 2007. He compiled a 49-143-2 record.

Kingsford (7-8) plays at Marquette on Tuesday.
