MARQUETTE — Kingsford’s Peyton Johnson was a record-breaking freshman in the 2016 Marquette Invitational high school swim meet.

She’s still a record-breaker as evidenced by the senior’s performance in the same meet.

Johnson set meet and team records Saturday in the 100 IM and 50 free, erasing standards from the 2016 meet. She posted a 1:02.58 to best her previous meet record time of 1:03.14 in the 100 IM; the 50 free moved down from 28.31 to 27.21.

“The girls and boys had a great meet,” said Kingsford head coach Jim Lindstrom. “While we did not garner a lot of medals in this one, the girls really did a great job. Peyton Johnson did a fantastic job.”

Johnson also figured in another team record, joining Sydney Scott, Kendall Johnson and Ailie Schoenborn to win 200 medley in 2:00.15. They topped the mark of 2:00.77 held by Toni DeMerse, Hailey Johnson, Peyton Johnson and Emily Bruns.

In the race of the day, Kingsford’s Ailie Schoenborn, Sydney Scott, Emily Bruns and Peyton Johnson (1:46.66) edged Marquette (1:47.21) by .55 in the 200 freestyle relay. Both teams swam below the meet record of 1:48.66.

“That 200 freestyle relay at the end of the meet had the whole pool area screaming,” Lindstrom said. “Our girls relays have been fantastic all year. When one girl doesn’t swim her best race the others step up and cover. The teamwork on this team in general, both girls and boys, has been phenomenal.”

The Flivvers also had a fifth from freshman Sydney Scott in 50 free and a fourth from Samantha Scott in 50 back.

Lindstrom said the Flivver boys “had a lot of personal best and some swims that were really noteworthy.”

John Lundholm was the top finisher with a second in 50 fly.

“John is one of those quiet kids who works his tail off and just keeps getting better and better,” Lindstrom said. “Luke Sturm is a lot like Lundholm, quiet, very hard worker that every meet just improves by leaps and bounds.”

Sturm had a fourth in 50 breast and a fifth in the 100 IM. Kolbe Raiche placed fourth in 100 back and sixth in 50 fly. Shane Brooks added a fifth and a sixth in the 50 free and 50 back, respectively.

“They were all in the top six and all hard workers,” Lindstrom said. “Even with the low numbers on the boys team the way they work together is something special.”
