Women’s Basketball: Jacobson explodes for 36 points

MEQUON, Wis. – Led by a career performance by Miranda Jacobson, Lakeland University rallied from a nine-point deficit at the end of regulation and then finished overtime on another run to defeat Concordia University Wisconsin 89-81 in an important Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference women’s basketball game Saturday.

Jacobson, a senior from Felch, scored a career-high 36 points and converted the go-ahead three-point play in overtime, the start of a 12-2 run to end the game. The Muskies defeated Concordia in overtime for the second time this year and moved ahead of the Falcons as both teams fight for position near the top of the NACC standings.

Jacobson followed up her second career triple-double two days earlier by obliterating her previous scoring high of 22 set last season against Dominican University on Jan. 24, 2018. She made 13 of 19 shots from the field and 8 of 11 from the free throw line, and also added 12 rebounds plus six assists.

Jacobson was not the only hero of the day, though, as it took a team effort for Lakeland (17-4 overall, 13-3 NACC) to defeat Concordia (14-6, 12-3). The Muskies rallied on multiple occasions, including from a 14-point deficit in the first half and then again from nine points down with 4 1/2 minutes to play in regulation.

Abby Nylund, a sophomore from Crystal Falls, hit a three-pointer from the corner at the end of the shot clock to give Lakeland an 83-79 lead with 1:03 left in overtime.

Lakeland rallied to take a five-point lead late in the third quarter, with Jacobson scoring six straight points to make it 61-56.

Jacobson’s 36 points were the most by a Muskie in more than 16 years, since Jill Dewane scored 37 points against Marian on Jan. 19, 2002. Jacobson also finished five points shy of tying the school single-game scoring record of 41 points set more than 30 years ago by Stacy Urbas against Wisconsin Lutheran on Dec. 17, 1988.

The Norse (17-6), who began the second half with a 40-25 lead, forced 30 Silver Lake turnovers in the game.

Norway’s Jordan Kraemer led the Norse with 17 points and Felch’s JuliAnn Wickman added 16.
