Ice fishing gets underway

IRON MOUNTAIN — The early ice fishing season has arrived but, as always, extreme caution is advised.

Much of the ice cover is only surface thick, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Until ice fishing really kicks in, a few anglers were still fishing on the Menominee River for whitefish, walleye and browns, said Aaron McCullough, DNR wildlife technician at Wausaukee.

At Whispering Pines Outpost in Breitung Township, John Grier was receiving reports of walleye success, with Lake Mary and Way Dam among the destinations.

Hunters, meanwhile, were getting supplies for the muzzleloader deer season, which continues through Sunday.

At Whisler Outdoors in Florence, Wis., Fay Whisler said a few anglers were testing the shallow lakes.

Turkey and bear hunters in Wisconsin are reminded not to forget to submit their 2018 permit applications by Sunday’s deadline.

The Vulcan Relic Riders are hosting a vintage snowmobile show and swap meet beginning at 9 a.m. today at the Long Branch Saloon in Faithorn.

Snowmobile judging will be at 2 p.m. with trophies awarded at 3:30 p.m.

Spectator admission is free, with donations of non-perishable food items welcomed. There will be live music after the show.

The Michigan DNR had no updated fishing report this week.
