Shanks gets scholarship for full ride to Michigan State


KINGSFORD — Kingsford High School senior, Alek Shanks, has been awarded Michigan State University’s prestigious STARR Charitable Foundation Scholarship.

This scholarship will pay all regular costs for eight semesters at Michigan State University. Benefits include tuition, fees, books, room, board, and incidental expenses as defined by the University, beginning with the fall semester of each year. STARR scholars must demonstrate academic interest and achievement by attaining a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.  Additionally, the scholars must demonstrate distinguished personal character and leadership ability.

Alek has been on the Academic Honor Roll throughout high school and is ranked number one in his senior class. He is a member of National Honor Society and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and has been named AP Student of the Month in AP Calculus and AP Computer Science.

He was also selected as the KHS Daily News Student of the Week. He has earned varsity letters in football, hockey, and tennis. His tennis honors include being named a GNC and U.P. Champion as well as receiving All-U.P. Division 1 honors. Alek also received All-conference Honorable Mention honors in hockey.

He has numerous volunteer hours for his school and community and also volunteers as an altar server at American Martyrs Catholic Church. He is currently doing an internship at BOSS Snowplow of Iron Mountain. Alek plans to major in computer science.

“Alek has demonstrated great commitment to his academic studies and athletic participation during his years at KHS which has allowed him to excel in both areas.  Alek is an outstanding role model for all students both in the classroom and in the athletic arena.  With Alek’s dedication to all endeavors he undertakes, I have no doubt he will continue to be successful,” Smithson added.

Alek is KHS’ fifth recipient of the MSU STARR Scholarship.

He is the son of Mark and Joan Shanks of Kingsford.
