KINGSFORD — Music, music and more music filled the fellowship hall Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford for the Golden K meeting, which was under the leadership of Vance Uhazie.

Members were delighted to see Alyce Derwinski, aka “snowbird,” sit down at the piano and put those black and whites to work. Lois Outcelt got the group together singing “Blue Skies,” “Amapola,” and “Among My Souvenirs,” just a few of the oldies that some of the Golden Kers can harmonize on.

The Welcome song was sung for the Kingsford Concert Choral, along with their director, Crystal Hogan. Welcoming back Bill and Margaret Trudell, Allen and Phyllis Galeazzi, Alyce Derwinski and guest, Myrna Ward. Happiness was spread even further with a “Happy Mother’s Day” to all mothers from Jim Verrette.

Happy Birthday to Diane Aune, May 8, and congratulations to Sharon Scholke who won the 50/50 drawing.

Members were reminded to mark their calendars for the upcoming meetings in addition to the Monday meetings this month. The Wednesday Golden Throats singers resumed their schedules for singing at the local nursing homes, on Monday at ManorCare.

May 23 will be the “Come and Get to Know the Golden K” night. Social hour will begin at 7 p.m. This is an invitation open to anyone interested in getting to know these seniors and learn what they do throughout this community. They will gladly share what it means to hold the special events each year for the special needs children.

May 30 will be the annual picnic at City Park for the special needs children. No matter the weather these children bring along their smiles and excitement enough to brighten any day.

Paul Ward, program chairman, introduced Crystal Hogan. She brought the Kingsford High School Coral Concert Ensemble. They gave the Golden K a preview of their concert to be performed at the Kingsford auditorium. The students came in full costume. Each student had a costume relating to Disney movie characters. Hogan, with her official Disney Mickey Mouse ears directed the group with the flair seen in “Fantasia.”

If one was able to attend the concert you would have been impressed with the special effects, lighting and choreography, not to mention the singing. The students continue to impress with their talent. The songs all relating to Disney movies were varied, as well as the performers, singing in a group or doing a solo as others sang the accompaniment in the background and dancing while twirling ribbons gave the audience an outstanding performance. One cannot do justice to the costumes they were unique and have to be seen to be appreciated.

Knowing these students have other priorities in their curriculum; they are coming down to the end of the school year and outside activities, the Golden K members feel very appreciative to the students, Hogan and the Kingsford High School for allowing them time to share this musical interlude with the group.

There should be “standing room only” whenever young people perform. It is heartwarming and delightful to see a group of about 40 students “at work,” — enjoying every minute.

The Golden Throats, unable to sing at the various nursing homes for the last two months, will resume their usual schedule. May 17 will be at Freemans, May 24 at Evergreen with the fifth Wednesday to be announced.

All Golden K Monday meetings are open to anyone. Come for the social time, the singing and/or the program. Meetings begin at 10 a.m. with a short business meeting followed by a program and dismissal is at 11 a.m.
