KINGSFORD — The month of May brings cool nights and warm days and lots of scratch marks on the calendar. Dates get saved for graduations, family get-togethers, camping trips, picnics, special occasions and holidays, gardens to plant, and, of course, there is the grass to be cut weekly. With the all these activities getting into full swing, it was a pleasure to sit back and just take in the music of the Kingsford High School Concert Chorale as they entertained the Golden K on Monday.

Under the direction of Jeremiah Garrigues-Cortelyor, this group of young people came bright and early, all dressed in their finest. The Golden K members knew they were in for a delightful half-hour of singing from these students.

Beginning with “Waving Through a Window” featuring a solo part with Brenna Phillips and one by Kelsey Koehler, along with the rest of the ensemble, introduced this “new”song to the seniors. Jenna Watson followed with her rendition of “Lean On Me,” sung with unpretentiousness that had many people humming along with her. Delaney Harris soloed with “Don’t Know Why,” putting a lot of feeling and soul to her music. The Greased Lightning Quartet, consisting of McKenzie Toby, Noel Myers, Delaney Harris and Jenna Watson, performed in full costume, making sure all white gloves were in place. The entire group finished with a medley of songs from the movie “Grease,” complete with their own choreography in dance steps and doing the hand jive.

Knowing these students put in many hours of practice along with their studies, the Golden K first thanks the students for their excellent performance, director Garrigues-Cortelyor and Kingsford High School for allowing them time “off” to share their talent with us.

Vance Uhazie opened the business meeting, welcoming the Kingsford Chorale.

While Sue LeDuc warmed up the piano, Al Calcari picked up the director’s “baton” and several patriotic songs were sung in remembrance of those who have served this country in years past and those who are serving today.

With Memorial Day on Monday, there will be no Golden K meeting; however, members need to mark their calendars for Tuesday — this will be the picnic for the special-needs children at City Park. Members will gather between 8:30 and 9 a.m. to begin set-up and food preparations.

Among the many guests welcomed at Monday’s meeting were Myrna Magni, Mae Arlene Lindstrom, Lee Lindstrom, Pat Smaby, RSVP Director Kathy Arnold, Mary Ann Koerschner and Fran Gundlach and the Kingsford High Chorale.

Bill Roberts happily took home the winnings from the 50-50 drawing.

The Golden K donates to several local organizations yearly. St. Vincent de Paul is one of those. Representatives Gunlach and Koerschner accepted their check and up-dated the Golden K on their organization.

Gunlach encouraged anyone interested in volunteering to contact her. Volunteers are needed in the food pantry, answering phones (with training), or working in the store.

St. Vincent de Paul tries to help people with emergency needs or direct individuals to other resources that are better able to help in some situations.

Happy birthday wishes to Dr. Paul Jacobs, May 21; Al Calcari, May 24; and Lois Chartier, May 27. Happy Anniversary to Ron and Joan Jouppi,May 25.

With June just around the corner, the general meeting of the Golden K will be June 4, with Gary Proudfit.

The Golden Throats will sing at Victorian Pines on June 6.
