Tai chi offered at NWTC in Aurora

AURORA, Wis. — What can you do to increase your strength and balance? The Florence County Aging and Disability Resource Center, Health Department and NWTC are partnering to provide an evidence-based chronic disease prevention program through Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention.

The program is targeted to middle-aged and older adults, both men and women but is open to all. The program is appropriate for both sedentary and active adults.

Classes will be offered twice a week from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. beginning May 2 on Mondays and Wednesdays for six weeks at NWTC in Aurora. Class will not be held on Memorial Day. The classes are being partially funded through a grant by Florence County ADRC and the Health Department. The cost to participants is $60 for 12, one-hour sessions. The class will be led by Debbie Flannery, M.Ed. who is a certified instructor in Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention.

Tai chi provides strengthening exercises and stretching, which are important in living healthier, more active lives.

Research shows that a program of strengthening and stretching improves bone density and reduces falls, improves arthritis symptoms, and decreases high blood pressure.

Chronic diseases such as heart disease, respiratory disease and diabetes can be positively impacted by exercise. Falls are the leading cause of injuries in older adults.

Participation in balance exercises, moderate-intensity muscle strengthening exercises and moderate-intensity walking can reduce fall rates among older adults (aged 65 and older) by 30 percent according to the CDC. Consult your physician prior to participation.

Classes require a minimum of 20 participants so call today to register. If you are interested in participating in Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention, contact Cinde at the Florence County Health Department at 715-528-4837.
