Young Women in Science scholarship deadline extended

IRON MOUNTAIN — Zonta of Iron Mountain-Kingsford area is providing eight scholarships to young women currently in ninth through 11th grades who have an interest in science, the ecology of the Great Lakes and have a desire to be an active crew member aboard a large schooner sailing ship.

This learning trip is three days and two nights. It is being conducted on Friday, July 13 until Sunday, July 15. The ship departs from Hessel, and debarks at St. Ignace. Young women will become scientists and will conduct research projects related to the ecology of Lake Michigan. Students will also record weather observations several times a day for the National Weather Service and students will have a hand on learning experience on how to sail and navigate the big ship as a crew member.

Applications are available in the high school guidance office. For more information on the Inland Seas Education in Science program visit www.schoolship.org. All applications and materials must be received by the guidance office in time to meet the deadline extended to Monday, April 23.
