Library plans third annual block party for Sept. 8

IRON MOUNTAIN — Upcoming events at the Dickinson County Library include:

Tuesday

The Page by Page Book Club will meet at 6 p.m. at the main Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain. The book selection is chosen at each month’s meeting for the upcoming month, so attend the program to cast a vote. The selection will be advertised on the library’s website, www.dcl-lib.org/pbpbookclub, which also has reading guides and past selections. New members are always welcome.

Wednesday

Family Games Night, 6 p.m. at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain and Solomonson Branch in Norway. Kids, teens and families are invited to drop in at any time during the program to play a variety of board and card games, or bring their own.

Saturday

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month at the Dickinson County Library. During Library Card Sign-Up Month, the American Library Association and libraries across the country celebrate the humble library card, and remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all. Students can turn to the library for materials, programs, and knowledgeable library staff, all of which support academic achievement.

In addition, to celebrate Library Card Sign-Up Month, all new patrons age 18 and older who sign up for a library card during the month at the Dickinson County Library and branches will be entered to win a gift card. Current patrons also can be entered to win by adding an email address to their contact information, or confirming the email address already on file.

Monday, Sept. 3

The Dickinson County Library and Branches will be closed for the Labor Day Holiday.

Tuesday, Sept. 4

Fall/winter hours will begin. The main Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain will be open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. The Solomonson Branch in Norway will be open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The North Dickinson Branch in Felch will be open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday and Friday, and 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.

Preschool children can play and learn at Celebrate Grandparents Storytime at 10:30 a.m. at the main Dickinson County Library. Grandparents Day is right around the corner — visit the library to make a special craft and enjoy songs, stories and rhymes about the wonderful grandparents in our lives. Preschool storytimes are an excellent opportunity to learn about early literacy practices that can be used when reading together at home.

Thursday, Sept. 6

Preschool children can play and learn at Celebrate Grandparents Storytime at 10:30 a.m. at the Solomonson Branch in Norway. Visit the library to make a special craft and enjoy songs, stories, and rhymes about the wonderful grandparents in our lives.

Friday, Sept. 7

Celebrate Grandparents Storytime, 10:30 a.m. at the North Dickinson Branch in North Dickinson School in Felch Township.

Saturday, Sept. 8

Celebrating the library community with a Block Party 10 a.m. to noon at the main Dickinson County Library in downtown Iron Mountain. Weather permitting, the library will have performers, snacks and prize drawings outside. If it rains, come inside and experience the same fun. Visit the information station to learn about the best ways to use a library card, and meet the Friends of the Library, who volunteer to support the library all year long. Library Director Megan Buck will lead groups on short tours of the newly redesigned Reading Room. Drawings will take place for a total of three Kindle Fire tablets, at 10:30, 11 and 11:30 a.m.. Begin entering the drawing once a day with each library visit from Aug. 20 through Sept. 8. Winners must be present for the drawings, so join us for food, fun and a chance to win. This program is sponsored by the Iron Mountain Kingsford Kiwanis and Friends of the Dickinson County Library.
