Klenke presents Niagara museum program for Golden K

Karen Klenke of the Niagara Historical Society displays some items for a new Children’s Corner at the Niagara Museum. Klenke shared information regarding a small and exciting addition to the museum with items for children, including dress up items from “grandma’s closet” and toys from the past. Looking on is Golden K program chairperson Gilbert Engel.

By The Golden K For The Daily News KINGSFORD — Mondays are the best mornings of the week for retirees or those over 55 who enjoy fellowship and being with other like-minded senior volunteers. If this sounds like something for you — join the Dickinson area Golden K Club from 10 to 11 a.m. Mondays at the Presbyterian Church fellowship hall on Hamilton Avenue in Kingsford. Along with a variety of good programs each week, there is also coffee and donuts, singing of a few golden oldies, Pot of Gold, Happy Dollars and much more. “Happy Birthday” was sung for George Pera, whose birthday is today. Celebrating anniversaries this week are Golden K members Pat and Jon Corson. The weekly Pot of Gold was won by Don Pedo. Gilbert Engel, March chairman, introduced Karen Klenke of Niagara, Wis., as speaker for the March 18 meeting. The Golden K “Welcome Song” was sung for Klenke. Klenke is presently the director of the Niagara Historical Museum. She is well-known in the area for her photography and snapping photos at events in Wisconsin and the U.P. Klenke, representing the Niagara Historical Society, started her presentation by addressing questions regarding what will happen to the old clubhouse building, which was the “hub” for Niagara for so many years. No solution has been reached, although several suggestions have been presented. Klenke’s main presentation featured a new project at the museum, which is the children’s corner. She traced the effort to get a grant from the M & M Area Community Foundation, which awarded them $2,400. The corner will be 20-20 and will feature areas for reading, vintage and modern toys, and dress-up. She also displayed some vintage clothes that will be part of the museum. A special exhibit is the dinosaur that will have a 5-foot wing span.“Paula” which is the name for the dinosaur chosen by the Niagara fifth grade class, will fly overhead. The name “Paula” is honoring the head of the organization who awarded the grant money for the project. A member commented on the lighting project on the bluffs at holiday time. The green twinkling digital lights give the effect of seeing fireflies. The museum has a special event planned after Memorial Day. The Golden K thanks Klenke for keeping the group updated on the Niagara Museum and Niagara Historical Society, a great addition preserving the history of the neighboring Wisconsin community. The Dickinson County Veterans Office will present the program on Monday. For those Golden K members who enjoy singing, a group called the Golden Throats sings every week on Wednesdays at 2 p.m. at area nursing homes. The Golden Throats will be singing Wednesday at Evergreen Assisted Living in Kingsford.
