Dates set for walking tours of Florence historic buildings

FLORENCE, Wis. — In addition to the new exhibit at the Florence County Historical Society Museum featuring Florence High School through the years, there is also an exhibit that will take you on a visual tour of some of the historic buildings in the town of Florence.

You also can take an actual tour by participating in the next guided walk Saturday, which will be led by a historical society member.

That walk begins at 10 a.m. at the museum, located across from Steamin’ Joe’s Coffee Shop between Florence Avenue and Central Avenue on U.S. 2. The tour will take about 1 1/2 hours, with a refreshment stop at the Encore on Central about midway through the walk.

Those planning to participate should wear comfortable shoes, bring sunglasses and be ready to learn a little history during this leisurely 1.7 mile stroll. The tour will be canceled if it rains.

Another opportunity to go on the guided walk is set for 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, also beginning at the museum.

The buildings to be viewed are featured in the Historical Florence Walking Tour guidebook, which was developed in 2016 as a cooperative project of the Historical Society and Florence High School world geography class.

Updated a bit in 2019, the book will be available for purchase for $5 when the walks take place and at the museum from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The book also is available at the Wild Rivers Interpretive Center Gift Shop. The book allows people to take the history walk at any time by following the map printed in the book.

There is no charge to participate in the guided tour or to visit the museum; however, the historical society always appreciates donations. Call Karen Wertanen at 715-528-4744 or Debbie DeMuri at 715-528-3597 for more information.
