Experience offers inside view of dementia

The Aging and Disability Resources Center of Marinette County, in collaboration with Florence County, will host a “Dementia Live” workshop July 24. Dementia Live uses specialized gear within a safe setting that gives participants a real-life simulation of what it can be like to live with dementia.

AURORA, Wis. — The Aging and Disability Resource Center of Marinette County, in collaboration with the ADRC of Florence County, will host a workshop July 24 where family and professional caregivers can briefly experience the challenges and struggles of a person living with dementia.

Appointments can be made for Dementia Live from 1 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 24, in the Woodland Cafe at the Northeast Wisconsin Technical College site in Aurora.

This workshop is open to residents in Marinette and Florence counties. Both ADRCs are thankful to be able to provide this experience, said Teresa West, dementia care specialist for Marinette County.

Dementia Live is an innovative program designed by a team of dementia sensitivity, awareness and professional development experts from the nationally recognized AGE-u-cate Training Institute headquartered in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

Using specialized gear within a safe, experiential setting, Dementia Live gives participants a real-life simulation of what it can be like to live with dementia. The experience of being temporarily and safely immersed in the life of those with dementia can begin to change existing attitudes about dementia, which then opens the door to deepening the understanding of dementia and improving actions and care.

Learning, language and cultural barriers are minimized because everyone who experiences Dementia Live is going to feel the difference.

Dementia Live provides a tangible, real-life simulation for family members, health care professionals, co-workers, and friends who are at a loss when it comes to understanding the complexities of the disease. It teaches them how to respond to the cognitive, emotional and behavioral changes presented by individuals with dementia.

Registration is required for the Dementia Live experience. To register, call 715-732-3850.

Onsite respite care will be available for caregivers.
