Special show in Marquette

MARQUETTE — The Upper Peninsula Shakespeare Festival and Marquette Regional History Center will present “Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull,” a joint fundraiser, at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time Thursday, Aug. 1.

The show will be performed as a fully staged reading at the Marquette Regional History Center. Chekhov’s beloved and classic “slice of life” play proves the long-standing formula of comedy equaling tragedy plus time. The story studies the frustrating facets of bitter dissatisfaction, the ridiculousness of the human spirit and ultimately the inevitable and ironic satire of it all.

A ticket for the event includes a music by a Russian quartet and the fully staged reading. A cash bar will serve Moscow Mules.

The cast includes Jessica “Red” Bays, Thomas Laitinen, John Sarkela, Alastar Dimitrie, Lilith Kontos, B.G Bradley, Christopher Scott Leith, Monet Chartier, Hanna Numinen, Shane Vincent and Chet DeFonso. The adaptation was translated by Upper Peninsula Shakespeare Festival Executive Director Alastar Dimitrie.

Tickets at $10 for students, $12 for seniors and $20 for general admission and can be purchased at www.upshakes.org. Proceeds benefit both the Marquette Regional History Center and Upper Peninsula Shakespeare Festival and will go toward mounting a full production of “The Seagull” in the summer of 2020. For more information, call Artistic Director Jamie Weeder at 906-869-1456.
