Great Books Club to begin in September

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Dickinson County Great Books Club will begin its 2019-20 schedule of discussions at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, in the all-purpose room of the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.

All meetings take place on the second Monday of each month. Those who are interested can participate in one or all of the discussions.

The book for this year will be “Great Conversations 2.”

This collection of classic readings includes stories, poems, essays and a play.

These selections have earned their reputation as classics because they address concerns of perennial importance to generations of readers.

Readings for year 2019-20 will be —

— Sept. 9: “The Story of Samson,” Book of Judges 13-16;

— Oct. 14: “Selected Poems,” John Donne;

— Nov. 11: “Meditations One and Two,” Rene Descartes

— Dec. 9: “The Nose,” Nikolai Gogol;

— Jan. 13: “The Grand Inquisitor,” Fyodor Dostoevsky;

— Feb. 10: “The Fall of the House of Usher,” Edgar Allen Poe;

— March 9: “Bartleby the Scrivener,” Herman Melville;

— April 13: “Goblin Market,” Christina Rosetti

— May 11: To be announced.

These readings are collected in the “Great Conversations 2” manual published by The Great Books Foundation. This anthology can be ordered online at www.greatbooks.org/ or by phone at 1-800-222-5870. Attendees are asked to read the selections beforehand if they wish to participate in the discussion.
