Names in the News — Local students receive degrees from the University of Wisconsin in Madison

MADISON, Wis. — Nearly 7,000 students received degrees during the University of Wisconsin spring commencement ceremonies May 10-11 in Madison.

Local graduates receiving degrees included Sam Schaefer of Iron Mountain, School of Education, bachelor of science, rehabilitation psychology, rehabilitation psychology; and Samuel Hansen of Niagara, Wis., College of Letters and Science, master of arts-library and information studies, library and information studies.

The commencement speaker was NFL superstar and former Badger J.J. Watt, who told graduates the path to your dreams often never goes the way you imagine it will.

More than 1,500 University of Wisconsin Oshkosh students graduated in May during the 145th spring commencement ceremonies.

The new graduates–including more than 1,200 with bachelor’s degrees, more than 250 master’s degree candidates and more than 30 with doctoral degrees–join more than 90,000 others as UW Oshkosh alumni.

Local students include:

Crystal Falls — Lauren Henry, College of Letters and Science, anthropology;

Iron Mountain — Amber Larson, College of Letters and Science, kinesiology in healthcare science;

Whitney Wender, College of Letters and Science, multimedia journalism in advertising; College of Letters and Science, public relations;

Quinnesec — Brock Grenier, College of Letters and Science, kinesiology in exercise and fitness.

Wheaton College student Hannah Hayes of Norway was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2019 semester.

To earn dean’s list honors at Wheaton, an undergraduate student must carry 12 or more credit hours and achieve a 3.5 grade-point average or higher on the 4.0 scale.
