Daily Meditations: A faithful friend – Sirach 6:14

A number of years ago, there was a very successful film called “Brian’s Song.” It was based on the true story of a deep friendship between two professional football players: Gale Sayers and Brian Piccolo of the Chicago Bears.

One of the things that made the friendship even more special was Gale was black and Brian was white.

When Brian became fatally ill, Gale did everything possible to be at his side. There was nothing Gale wouldn’t do for him or his family.

One of the most touching scenes in the movie was when Brian died. Gale took a trophy he had just won, pasted Brian’s name on it and had it buried with his friend. Now that is powerful example of being a faithful friend!

In the book of Sirach, we have the story of how Ruth remained a faithful friend to Naomi, even though it was difficult time of famine.

We have all heard of the expression “a fair weather friend.” There are some people who will be there only when things are good. There is not much that will be asked of them.

A faithful friend will be there in good times and in bad. In the book of Sirach, we are told: “A faithful friend is sturdy shelter; he who finds one finds a treasure” — Sirach 6:14.

We pray that we can be that kind of friend!

God bless
