Prohibition Era presentation set

Menominee Range Historical Museum

“The Prohibition Era on the Eastern Menominee Iron Range — Part 3,” the conclusion of the PowerPoint series, will be presented by Bill Cummings at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Dickinson County Library. The program is free and open to the public. Edward G. Kingsford is at the far right of the above photograph, taken sometime between 1900 and 1910 in front of Peter Calvi’s Saloon at 531 S. Stephenson Ave. in downtown Iron Mountain. The other five men are unidentified.

In Iron Mountain’s first city directory in 1892, Peter (Mary) Calvi was listed as the proprietor of the Palace sample rooms (saloon), at this address, which boasted “a fine bar of imported and domestic wines, liquors and cigars. Fresh beer always on tap.” Calvi also lived here.

Calvis saloon was listed in the 1902, 1905, 1907 and 1913 city directories. By 1925, during the Prohibition era, Keeler L. Calvi and James P. Palmer were the proprietors of The Quality Hardware Store, featuring a “General and Complete Line of Hardware.” Calvi and Palmer still were operating The Quality Hardware Store in 1935, but in the 1939 and 1946 city directories Keeler L. Calvi was listed as the owner and proprietor.
