West End Players gear up for the premiere of ‘Matilda the Musical’

IRON RIVER — The West End Players in Iron River will present Roald Dahl’s “Matilda the Musical,” Friday through Sunday at the Windsor Center in Iron River.

The Tony and Olivier Award-winning musical is inspired by the 1988 children’s novel by British author Dahl, also known for “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “The BFG,” among others. The musical features a book by Dennis Kelly and music and lyrics by Tim Minchin. It received seven Olivier Awards in 2012, including Best New Musical, and five Tony Awards in 2013, including Best Book of a Musical.

The show tells the story of Matilda Wormwood, a little girl with a terrible home life and a thirst for knowledge. She also has psychokinetic powers and can move things with her mind. She is unloved by her selfish parents, but finds acceptance from her teacher, Miss Honey. At school, she must face the school’s cruel headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, who hates children and loves thinking up new punishments for them. Using her intelligence and her powers, Matilda helps her teacher, her fellow students and even herself find happiness.

Directing the show is Jason Mattson, who is joined by assistant director, Abigail Garcia. Also on the production team is Jeanine Garcia who is making her choreographic debut, Nancy Cheney as music director, and Abby Miller as vocal coach.

The show stars Rory Jacobson as Matilda, with the headmistress Miss Trunchbull being played by Benjamin Garcia and Miss Honey the teacher by Abby Miller. Also joining the cast is Josh Miskell playing Matilda’s father, Mr. Wormwood, and Lily Hodges as Mrs. Wormwood.

The show starts at 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students and $30 for families of four persons or more.

Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance at the Iron County Economic Chamber Alliance. Be advised this production features strobe lighting effects.
