Not only was “The Glenn Miller Story” one of the most profitable biopics ever filmed, but it also was one of the few to pay more than lip service to the facts. The film traces Miller’s rise from pit-orchestra trombone player to leader of a successful big band. It stars James Steward, June Allison and Harry Morgan. It was awarded the Oscar for Best Sound, Recording.

April: “Irving Berlin’s Easter Parade” (1948)

A nightclub performer hires a naive chorus girl to become his new dance partner to make his former partner jealous and to prove he can make any partner a star. It was awarded an Oscar for Best Music, Scoring of a Musical Picture and stars Judy Garland, Fred Astair and Peter Lawford.

“These films were produced to be watched on the big screen, with stereo sound, and fresh popcorn in hand,” said Wilma Kallie, Crystal Theatre board president. “Some of these movies might be available for home viewing, but it is a different experience to see them on a full-size screen and without distraction.

“We are excited about presenting this community entertainment option. For years, the theatre remained dark during the cold-weather months, largely due to the cost of heating the building. Recently, we were able to upgrade the heating system with high-efficiency furnaces that now make it financially responsible to occasionally warm the building up during the winter months.”
