Michigan 4-H celebrates ‘Month of the Military Child’

IRON MOUNTAIN — April is the “Month of the Military Child” — a time to honor the sacrifices made by military families worldwide, with an emphasis on the experience of the dependent children of military members serving at home and overseas.

April was established as the Month of the Military Child in 1986 by Defense Secretary, Caspar Weinberger.

Michigan 4-H is honoring military families and children with a new game. Participants can complete missions, connect with other youth around the state and learn a little about the military in the “Original Scavenger Hunt App.”

The app can be downloaded for free, with new challenges available weekly. Those taking part can compete with others for points and prizes by posting either by text, photo/video or GPS. Rankings will be posted daily on the “Leaderboard” and “Activity Feed.”

Prizes awarded for high points, creative submissions and random drawings.

Themed weeks:

— Today to Sunday, “Gratitude”;

— Monday, April 19, to Sunday, April 25, “Recognition and Sacrifice”;

— Monday, April 26 to Friday, April 30, “Military Around the World.”

Anyone ages 13 to 19 can download the GooseChase app to a cell phone or tablet; younger youth or youth without a phone or tablet can partner with an older sibling or parent/guardian to play as a team. Participants do not need to be in 4-H or have any previous military knowledge to play.
