‘One Wonderful Day’ on Saturday at Fortune Lake

CRYSTAL FALLS — Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp brings the spirit and creativity of church camping to the stage of Crystal Theatre with an original musical “One Wonderful Day,” at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Written and produced by camp staff alumni, the idea for “One Wonderful Day” was conceived three years ago to celebrate the 90th anniversary of FLLC. Remembering their experiences as summer camp staffers, alumni who had either chosen music as a career or pastime were excited to share their enthusiasm through the medium of musical theatre.

“One Wonderful Day, an original show about the day in the life of a Fortune Lake camper, is going to be just that: wonderful,” FLLC Director Amanda Rasner said.

“A team of gifted staff alumni and volunteers have been working for more than three years to write, orchestrate, choreograph, design, and otherwise prepare for the show. Their expertise and dedication, partnered with the energy and talent of the performers will create camp magic right on the stage,” Rasner said.

Paused by the pandemic, the planners, writers, and music arrangers continued to work on the project, connecting with each other via Zoom. Iron County’s own Evan Premo — composer, co-founder of Scrag Mountain Music and artistic director of Beethoven and Banjos — served as the lead musical arranger with additional arrangement direction by FLLC staff alumni JD Uponen and Liz Grenke Leach.

The team arranged favorite camp songs, ranging from silly to sacred, for a 17-piece orchestra that will be conducted by Connie Lindblom, long-time music educator at Negaunee High School. Eliisa Gladwell Herman brings her talents as an experienced choreographer who has been involved with more than 50 theatrical performances spanning across the U.P. Mollie Trewartha leads as vocal director.

Special guest performers include Dean and Bette Premo, founders and organizers of Second Sunday Folk Dances at FLLC for 30 years and 47 North Fusion Dance Troupe of Houghton.

Most of the singers, dancers, and instrumentalists have registered as campers for Musical Theatre Week. During the week, others will create the set designed by “One Wonderful Day” director Kristin Underhill, a FLLC alumnus and new manager of Crystal Theatre. The entire production must come together in only seven days when the curtain opens.

Tickets for the musical may be ordered online at fortunelake.org or by calling 906-875-3208. Tickets will also be available at the door.
